MDTA Aged Toll Transactions FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about the posting of aged Maryland toll transactions to customer E-ZPass accounts.
Why am I being charged now for Maryland toll transactions that occurred as far back as July of 2020?
Maryland transitioned to a new tolling system during the period from June 2020 through April 2021, in the midst of COVID-19 which strained the vendor’s ability to properly staff during the transition. In order to ensure that customers were charged the proper fare, the MDTA paused posting some E-ZPass transactions to customer’s accounts to prepare for the transition. Trips that occurred through that period have now begun posting.
What is the benefit to the customer to posting the transaction electronically now?
By billing now, albeit late, benefits the customer as the toll rate will be less than the higher Video Toll rates. If the toll could not be posted to your E-ZPass account, Maryland would have issued you Notice of Toll Due by mail where the toll rate would have been at the higher Video Toll rate, 50% higher than the E-ZPass toll rate.
Is this a one-time catch up charge or may there be others?
Valid trips that occurred during that period will continue to be processed for payment until the buildup of transactions is cleared.
